Our youth sailing course offers a progression route for those sailors who have excelled in their school sessions and would like to take their sailing tuition to the next level.
Focussing on Stages 3 and 4 of the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme as well as elements of advanced modules such as Seamanship Skills and Sailing with Spinakkers this course pushes young sailors to take greater responsibility for their learning.

12 session course
In 2018 Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust provided lessons for over 600 primary school pupils and young people from special schools with special educational needs and disabilities. Without the Trust, teachers tell us that many pupils who sail with us would not be able to access this opportunity.
If you are able to make a donation in addition to the course fee, it will go towards the cost of an 8-week schools’ sailing course which will help a child develop their skills, confidence and wellbeing. You can choose the amount to donate with your booking at checkout. Thank you!
We will collect sailors from the North bank (Ferryboat Beach) and the South bank (HRSC).
All Sailors are fitted with HRCST Buoyancy Aids, but they can wear their own if preferred. Wetsuits are ideal though not absolutely essential. Sailors must have shoes that can get wet. A set of dry clothes at the pick up point is a good idea as we can guarantee that they will get wet!
There will be two distinct groups with different emphasis and objectives:
One group will be for those younger sailors who may have participated in our youth regattas last year but are very new to racing and advanced sailing. This group will mainly sail in Laser Picos and will look at building on the racing skills already gained as well as some content from the RYA Youth Stage 3 and 4 Syllabi.
The other group will be for those older sailors who have already participated in youth training in previous years and who want to continue to build on their sailing experience. This group will mainly sail in RS Fevas and will focus on the advanced modules of the RYA National Sailing Scheme such as Seamanship Skills, Sailing with Spinnakers and Performance Sailing.
These groups will be decided by the instructors on the beach each session and there is a certain amount of flexibility between groups throughout the course.
The minimum standard required for eligibility for these sessions is RYA Youth Stage 2, and a keen and enthusiastic desire to learn more advanced skills.
After booking, please ensure the sailor has read and agreed to the Youth Sailing Expected Behaviour Contract. This is an agreement that safety and behaviour guidelines will be followed at all times whilst participating in youth sailing.
Thank you for your booking on our Youth Sailing Course.

Please note that we require you to collect your children from us on the beach/quay for their safety, unless they are aged 11 years or over andyou have agreed to their release from our care in your absence, in writing.

Notes for HRSC Pontoons Location
Please wait on the stone quay at the head of the pontoons leaving a clear walkway through for HRSC members. The car park and facilities at the sailing club are for members use only. We are guests on their property. Please ensure that our impact on club members and staff is kept to a minimum. Membership of the sailing club is available for those who wish to use these facilities.
What to bring
Please ensure that all sailors arrive in wetsuits and are fitted with study footwear that they can get wet (not flip-flops/crocs!). Lightweight windproof jackets that can get wet are a good idea particularly if the wind is high or rain is forecast. Hats and gloves are also good if particularly susceptible to cold. You can keep an eye on the weather at http://www.xcweather.co.uk/forecast/Helford.
If you need to report an absence you can reply to this email or call/text us on 07393 548761. Please try and notify us as early as possible as it may affect operational decisions.
Thank you for your booking and we look forward to seeing you soon!
