John Green MBE« Back to News

June 2010: John Green has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours. John founded the Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust back in 1997. Since then the trust has gone from strength to strength and has allowed thousands of youngsters to learn to row and sail. Even though he stood down as leader three years ago, John retains a close interest in the charity and says his MBE should be seen as an endorsement of the trust and all those volunteers who keep it running. “It’s a marvellous thing for the trust,” he said. “It is nice to be reminded of all those people who actively enabled the thing to get off the ground. I am very grateful to my family, the hundreds of volunteers who are the trust’s lifeblood and the leaders who come forward to continue our service to young people. They are very important because I did not actually believe it would continue. I thought when I stepped down nobody would be daft enough to carry it on.”
