The mission of the HRCST is to make a positive difference in the lives of children by enabling them to gain confidence for life through learning to sail and row at an early age, professionally supported by instructors and volunteers and with facilities provided to enable all to participate.
Learning to Row & Sail
The Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust is an RYA training center and an RYA On-Board member. Training is run by our team of dedicated RYA instructors. For beginners the Trust has a fleet of 24 Optimists and 6 Regatta rowing dinghies. More experienced sailors graduate to larger sailing dinghies.
Children learn quickly and take responsibility for their own safety as well as the safety and well-being of others. We serve local primary schools, as well as schools for children with special needs, and all at no charge to the children or their families, so that all can sail.
If it were not for the Trust most of these children would be unable to sail or to have access to the Helford River.

The key to the success of our programme is that each school provides a team of adult volunteers to accompany their children. Volunteers, the lifeblood of all we do, are trained by the Trust, and every week during the season more than 100 are engaged in outings on the river. This requires a huge commitment and we congratulate each one them for their dedication and ownership of the programme. In 2006 their efforts were rewarded with “The Queens Award for Voluntary Service”.
With no direct government funding, the Trust is financially dependent on the generosity of its friends and sponsors.
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service
The Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust has received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
This Award, announced by Her Majesty The Queen to mark the occasion of Her Golden Jubilee, recognises excellence in voluntary activities carried out by groups in communities.
Cornwall’s Lord-Lieutenant, Lady Mary Holborow, presented the Queen’s Award on behalf of Her Majesty at the Inter-schools Regatta on Saturday 22nd of July 2006.
This honour recognises the hard work of every one of our volunteers – the “Unsung Heroes” that this award celebrates. Congratulations and thanks to you all for this great achievement.
