An amazing season literally full of highs and lows. An enormous thank you to Mike and his team and all the volunteers for keeping everyone challenged but safe and to the sailors who rose to the challenges the weather threw at them with great spirit and determination. The Chamberlain Regatta saw 25 sailors battling it out in fresh winds and full sunshine for a place on the podium.Results and photos in the News section. Fingers crossed for an Indian Summer.

Congratulations and thanks to all those who took part in The Inter Schools Regatta and especially to Constantine who retained their title. The weather continues to challenge but not dampen our spirits Thanks to Mike and his team there have been some very inventive sessions. Becoming a Vicking in a Regatta Dinghy has got to be the best of fun.
We have afternoon slots left on Holiday Courses and a few places for Start Racing on a Saturday contact Alison for Holiday Courses Martin for Saturdays martin@hrcst.org.uk.

Welcome back to the river everyone.Great to be sailing again but do remember to wear lots of layers it’s not quite summer yet.

Wonderful in the depths of winter to be planning the start of the HRCST 2012 Sailing Season.
Monday April 30th is the first day of schools sailing

Half term and Summer Course dates and details are all under Holiday Courses above.
Schools Outings Slots are just being finalized but if you haven’t been contacted directly by Alison they are the same as last year though we are looking at pulling the times forward by 15 minutes for every session.

We will have teams out in force all the week and are looking for volunteers to man various sites around the Fal. Congratulations to all the teams (a record number) who took part in this years regatta. We were so lucky with the weather a little window between 2 storms.
Constantine are this years champions with Wendron a very close 2nd. Results were very close and have been posted on the News page. Has anyone got photos to post there too? Our very own version of Face Book. Thank you Mike and the team for all the hard work that goes into making this event such good fun.

This years Regatta is on Thursday 7th of July. All family and friends are invited to join us and the teams on Grebe Beach from 4pm for an afternoon of competitive fun. Bring a picnic/barbacue to keep your sailors well fuelled.
Holiday Courses are filling fast Don’t miss out on this splendid opportunity for hours of summer sailing.
Volunteers are welcome in fact essential so please let us know if you can give us some of your valuable time.

Welcome to all new sailors and volunteers and to Jamie Wharram and Harry Preston who have joined the team of Mike Pete Martin Annie and Sammy and myself. We are really happy to have Mark Pilgrim back with us as a volunteer SI and power boat instructor and more than delighted to have Gavin running power and safety boat courses again on a Wednesday morning.

2011 schools sailing starts on Tuesday 3rd of May with lots of refresher and power boat courses during April. Mike and I are working on dates. All should be posted by early January.

What a wonderful season we had. The weather helped but even on the rainy days everyone gave their best.
Big thankyou to Mike Pete Martin Annie and Sammy.
Nextseasons sailing starts on the first Tuesday in May but there will be lots of pre season training and refreshing opportunities. Outings plan and preseason dates will be on the web by January so keep a lookout and get signed up.

Prizes were presented by Anton Chamberlain to
Siobhan from Mawnan as the youngest sailor to complet all races she was also 10th overall.

Mike and the team have been busy over the summer break with 3 great holiday courses that saw visiting and local children all getting to know each other on and off the water. We had some great sails and loads of fun all round Thanks to all the Volunteers who helped to make it possible.
Autumn Sailing starts on Monday 6th for 4 weeks, lets hope for kind weather
Chamberlain Regatta is on Saturday 18th of September with 3 shortish races starting at 15.30 after the big swim. Details will be posted next week on the news page.

John Green MBE

John Green has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours. John founded the Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust back in 1997. Since then the trust has gone from strength to strength and has allowed thousands of youngsters to learn to row and sail. Even though he stood down as leader three years ago, John retains a close interest in the charity and says his MBE should be seen as an endorsement of the trust and all those volunteers who keep it running. “It’s a marvellous thing for the trust,” he said. “It is nice to be reminded of all those people who actively enabled the thing to get off the ground. I am very grateful to my family, the hundreds of volunteers who are the trust’s lifeblood and the leaders who come forward to continue our service to young people. They are very important because I did not actually believe it would continue. I thought when I stepped down nobody would be daft enough to carry it on.”

We wanted to make Skolly show people that sailing is healthy.
Thank you for letting us put Skolly the bear on the Optimist.
He found it extremely fun and healthly.
Skolly is really good at sailing so he is really healthy.
Skolly was very sad to leave at the end of the day.

Regatta Report: May 2009

Children have a fantastic day sailing at the HRCST sailing regatta!!!!

On the 3.7.09 children from many schools who work with HRCST, joined together on Grebe beach for a big regatta

They did a lot of exciting challenges involving: Ropes, Rowing and even a big sailing race.

The children also had a choice if there group wanted to do a sea shanty and gain some extra points!!!! Alex Hayton , a pupil from one of the participating schools (Wendron) says, “I loved the Regatta the trust had a lot of good ideas which let us kids have a fab time whilst learning loads about sailing!!!!”

In the end all the participating teams joined together and after a big thanks to the staff they discovered that surprisingly Wendron won again (that’s twice in a row!!!!)

In a nutshell it was a very enjoyable and exciting day!!!!

Just had to put this picture up: Josh, a novice this year, has had about 4 sessions actually sailing (just look at that confidence!) and he is shouting “Land Ahoy!” at his compatriots on the beach, having just sailed about 1/2 mile from the middle of the mouth of the Helford. Rock on Mike!

2007 Awards Celebration

Our 2007 Awards Celebration was held at RNAS Culdrose. Our grateful thanks go to Captain Phillip Thicknesse who opened the stations gates to around 400 HRCST Supporters, Volunteers Parents and Children and to all those who worked behind the scenes to make it such an enjoyable evening.

World and Olympic Sailing Champion Ben Ainslie, who started his career sailing an Optimist on the Fal, presented awards to 36 children who had shown exceptional talent enthusiasm or commitment throughout the season.

HRCST founder John Green with Ben, and the Sailors of the Year: Emily Rhodes, Megan Williams, Morag Ransley and Gilbert Radcliffe.

9 May 2007: On a beautiful sunny spring day, HRH Princess Anne came to Pedn Billy beach to watch the Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust in action and to meet children and volunteers.

Princess Anne and John Green chat with Charlotte Nichols, Joe Tarling and headteacher Jean Whetham from Cury Primary School.

John Green, Cadet Flight-Seargeant Joanna Tisdale, HRH Princess Anne and Admiral Sir Robert Woodard watching the sailing. Joanna Tisdale, HM Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for All Cornwall 07, is a fregular Volunteer with Mabe School where Joanna learnt to sail. When 11 years old she helmed the Founders Dinghy ‘Cicely’ to come 2nd in the DOGS Ladies race!

In his speech John Green said: “Participants all share a belonging, loyalty and fellowship. For many it is their first opportunity in life to savour the delights of our river.”
